Born in 1805, William Knell is considered to be the most important of an eminent family of marine artists.

Knell painted in oil and water-colour on the southern coast of England and off France, Belgium and Holland.

He lived in London and was a frequent exhibitor between 1825 and 1866. He died in 1875.
