About the Artist:
As the nephew of John Lucas the portrait painter, John Seymour Lucas painted figures, historical pieces and portraits in both oil and water-colour.
Born in London in 1849, he studied at St. Martin's School of Art and at the Royal Academy Schools. He began exhibiting from 1872 and, during his career, became an elected Member of the New Society of Painters in Water-colours and of the Royal Academy. He died in 1923.
Lucas's wife, Marie, also painted portraits.
