About the Artist:
Jan Baptist Vrients was born in 1552 and is one of the great names of the golden age of Dutch cartography which flourished at the turn of the 17th century.
He made a living as a map engraver and publisher in Antwerp but, after the death of Abraham Ortelius in 1598, he acquired the publication rights to Ortelius’s atlas masterpiece Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, which he subsequently re-issued in a number of different formats, including new maps of his own creation.
These were published principally between 1601 and Vrients’s death in 1612. He also published a number of important individual maps and a small atlas of the Netherlands.
