About the Artist:
The Dutch map publisher Pieter van der Aa was born in 1659, probably in Leiden, and was apprenticed to a bookseller at the age of 9.
He set up on his own in business as a book publisher in his early 20s and, over the remaining years of his life until his death in 1733, he published a great variety of material, including illustrated works and atlases of many kinds.
Two of his published collections contained almost 30 volumes each, and over 3,000 maps and plates.
Pieter van der Aa did not create most of the maps he published, which generally drew from the work of previous cartographers. However, the high decorative quality of his publications made them popular with collectors of the time and they are much sought after today.
