About the Artist:
For most of the 16th century, German cartographers led the way in producing town plans, inspired by the 60 plans included within Sebastian Münster’s influential Cosmographia of 1544.
Shortly after the publication of Cosmographia, Frans Hogenburg, a map engraver for Ortelius, compiled with another noted contemporary engraver, Georg Hoefnagel, a City Atlas which was intended as a companion to Ortelius’s Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. The resulting atlas was entitled Civitates Orbis Terrarum and was edited by Georg Braun, and published in six volumes between 1572 and 1618.
In all, the City Atlas included more than 500 city plans, including ones for London, Cambridge, Oxford and many other principal towns of the British Isles. Most of the town views provided a bird’s eye view and included important details of public buildings, residents in local dress, rural and domestic scenes and street names. In 1617 the Atlas was re-issued by Jan Jansson, who decided to remove the costumed figures which were by now of course wearing garments that were out of fashion.
