About the Artist:
Maurice Frederick Codner was born in 1888 and was an eminent portrait painter of the first half of the 20th century. He died in 1958.
Codner was a great friend of Sir Alfred Munnings, who encouraged and inspired not only him but also his artist son, John Whitlock Codner. Munnings and Codner spent a great deal of time together and one significant Munnings painting is entitled Maurice Codner Painting at Flatford Mill.
Several of Codner’s portraits are held today in the National Portrait Gallery.
