About the Artist:
The significant map publisher Herman Moll worked mainly from London, but he was in fact a Dutch emigrant who arrived in the city in approximately 1680 to work as an engraver.
As he established his practice, he was later able to set up his own business and eventually to become, after the turn of the 18th century, the most significant map publisher in England.
In a career flourishing between 1678 and 1732, Moll’s output was prolific, ranging from atlases and decorative large maps through to loose maps and miniatures. His work was very highly regarded and was frequently copied by other publishers.
Moll’s first atlas was published in approximately 1700 and his Atlas Manuale – A New Set of Maps of All Parts of the Earth was issued in 8 volumes from 1709. He continued to issue new atlases throughout his career.
