About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:
Born in Paris in 1838, Pierre Bourgogne was a painter who worked predominantly at Sevres, where he died in 1904.
His exquisitely-worked still lifes combine freshness with the marvellous warmth of nineteenth century work of this genre. The muted yet rich colours glow from the superbly wrought backgrounds with a lasting appeal.
A pupil of Galland, Polish, and Lequien, Bourgogne specialised in still life. He exhibited at the Paris salon every year from 1869 – 1904 and, in the process, he obtained an Honourable Mention in 1888 and a medal in 1889. Exhibiting at the Expostion Universelle in 1889 he was again awarded a medal. He also exhibited in London at The Royal Academy in 1888.
