About the Artist:
Born in 1821, Robert Seldon Duncanson was of mixed-European and African ancestry. He was born in Fayette, New York and the family moved to Michigan when he was seven. By the age of 17 he had established a painting business with a partner, but he gave this up in order to pursue his ambition to work as a portrait painter. He moved to Mount Pleasant, Ohio because Cincinnati had a strong art`s community. With no formal art education, he taught himself by copying prints, engravings and portraits and inspired by Thomas Cole and other members of the Hudson River School, he turned to landscapes. Over a period of 20 years he took many trips to Europe which were funded by Cincinnati based patrons and even a local anti-slavery league. Sadly, in the final years of his life, he developed Dementia and died at the age of 51 in 1872.
