About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:
This marvellous, quintessentially English, artist flourished between 1836 and 1880. He was a member of the Cranbrook Colony, a group of artists based in Kent which strove to depict simple, unaffected scenes of rural life, and of children at play in particular.
Mulready exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1863 to 1880 and, unusually for a Cranbrook artist, also had a special talent for London street scenes. In particular he had a penchant for painting street urchins, flower-sellers and children.
He was one of the few artists to record without too much sentiment the everyday street scenes of Victorian life.
