About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:
Born in 1859, Henry La Thangue began studying art at the Royal Academy Schools in London, where he won a Gold Medal in 1879.
He then went to Paris and studied with J. L. Gérôme for three years. It was whilst in Paris that La Thangue was able to observe the influence of the Barbizon and plein-air painters such as Bastien-Lepage and Dagnan-Bouveret.
During his early years, La Thangue, like many of his contemporaries, was profoundly influenced by the work of Bastien-Lepage and spent the summers of the 1880s painting in Brittany and the South of France.
On his return to England, La Thangue lived in Surrey and renewed his friendship with Stanhope Forbes. He began exhibiting his landscapes and rustic scenes at the Royal Academy and at the Institute of Painters in Oils, as well as at many other leading London galleries.
In the years up to his death, La Thangue concentrated exclusively on scenes of village life in northern Italy. He died in 1929.
