About the Artist:

The painter and illustrator Archibald Eliot Haswell Miller was born in Glasgow in 1887.

He studied at the Glasgow School of Art between 1906 and 1908, and also travelled to study in Paris, Vienna, Munich and Berlin. During his travels he painted the dress and service uniforms of the French, German, Austrian and Italian armies, and extensively of the British Army in which no two regiments were ever dressed the same.

After the First World War, in which he served with the Highland Light Infantry, Haswell Miller was commissioned by the recently established Imperial War Museum to paint 65 watercolour studies showing the different types military uniforms. These, along with the work of other professional artists such as Harry Payne, laid the foundations for the study of uniforms and the creation of the Society for Army Historical Research.

Between 1910 and 1930, Haswell Miller was assistant professor at the Glasgow School of Art with a gap during the First World War. Subsequently, he was Keeper and then Deputy Director of the National Galleries of Scotland between 1930 and 1952. For the last 25 years of his life, Haswell Miller was artistic adviser to the Ogilby Trust, which would later play a significant part in the establishment and development of many military museums throughout Great Britain.

During his lifetime, his work was exhibited at the Royal Academy and also at the Royal Scottish Academy. He was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colours in 1924.

Haswell Miller specialised in the painting of portraits, especially the military portraits for which he is known today, landscapes and architectural subjects. He was also a noted illustrator of books.

AE Haswell Miller died in 1979.
