About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:
Lucien Fontanarosa was born in 1912 in Paris, to Italian parents; his father was a tailor. As a teenager Fontanarosa lived to draw, and started attending classes at the Académie Julian on the advice of the artist Gérard Cochet. He subsequently studied at the École Estienne and the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
As a young artist Lucien Fontanarosa won numbers of prizes - the Grand Prix d'Afrique du Nord, the Premier Grand Prix, the Prix Cottet - and perhaps more importantly the friendship and admiration of Édouard Vuillard. In 1940 Vuillard said, "We can let ourselves express our joyous praise upon seeing Fontanarosa's paintings... He has accomplished a true composition which is not just a simple study. His talent to imagine, to organize, to harmonize shapes and colours is shown with generosity." Among other honours, Lucien Fontanarosa was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour.
He had many important solo shows, but an important group exhibition that places him among his peers was at the Palais de la Méditerranée in Nice in 1964, where Fontanarosa exhibited alongside Carzou, Bret, Goerg, Limouse, Cavaillès, and Brayer. There was a major retrospective of the art of Lucien Fontanarosa at the same venue in 1973.
