About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:
Alfred was brought up in Bow, east London, where his father, Sam, was a tailor. He was always able to draw out his subjects’ particular characters, whether he was painting buildings, people or animals. He had a whimsical touch and whether he painted Billingsgate Market, Tower Bridge or Brighton Beach, each was full of colour and detail. Alfred was once described as a “Lowry for Londoners” referring to the late artist L S Lowry whom he was the joint winner with, of an art competition judged by the directors of the National Gallery and the Tate.
Alfred was outspoken but had integrity and lots of humour, which he delivered in a mischievous style. As a young graduate he toured Florence, Venice, Ravenna and Siena where he was deeply impressed by the Italian Primitives. His award winning murals and one of his early achievements (1952-54) at Hammersmith Town Hall depicting life on the Thames are regarded as a modern classic. In 1949, Alfred met Margot Hamilton Hill, a set and costume designer, at a dance at the RCA and later married her. Alfred became well known in Chiswick, where they lived, and always produced paintings for local exhibitions to raise money for charities.
He was elected a member of The Royal Watercolour Society in 1973, The Royal Society of British Artists in 1983 and elected Keeper of The Royal Society in 1991. One of his last assignments was to paint two pictures of the Chiswick Dog Show in 2014. Alfred died in London on the 27th of April 2015.
