About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Sir David Wilkie, one of the leading British artists of the early nineteenth century, was born 1785 in Cults, Fifeshire. He first trained at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh, and in 1805 went to London, where he entered the Royal Academy schools.

His humorous genre scenes of Scottish life painted in a detailed Flemish manner were extremely well-received, and Wilkie was made a full member of the Royal Academy in 1811. He exhibited frequently there between 1806 and 1841, and also at the British Institution.

After a visit to Spain in 1817-18, Wilkie turned to grander historical subjects, and began to paint in a broader technique inspired by Murillo and Velasquez. Following a severe illness in 1825, Wilkie was forced to travel abroad extensively for his health. He was nonetheless appointed Painter in Ordinary to King George IV in 1820, and in 1836 was knighted by William IV. On his way home from a trip to the Holy Land in 1841, Wilkie died at sea, an event commemorated by Turner in the painting Peace--Burial at Sea (The Burial of Sir David Wilkie), 1842 (Tate Gallery, London).

Wilkie had many followers and imitators in both England and Scotland until the end of the nineteenth century, and numerous engravings after his work can still be found in many Scottish houses.
