About the Artist:
Herbert Samuel "Bert" Thomas was a cartoonist who originally joined Punch in 1905. He served with the Artists Rifles during the First World War and thus met and worked with many other artists of the era. During the First World War, he was also a political cartoonist and raised a phenomenal amount of money (nearly a quarter of a million pounds) towards comforts for frontline troops, for which effort he was made a member of the Order of the British Empire in 1918.
