About the Art: Like fiery gems that capture and reflect the light that dances over their facets, the canvases of Joni Falk dazzle the eye, flashing with deep emerald greens and ruby reds, blazing with amethysts and sapphires, gleaming with golds. A native of Chicago and a graduate of Marquette, Falk and her husband moved to Arizona in 1960. Although she had long been involved with crafts, her career in art came later when she first discovered the beauty of Native American pottery, which she likened to little jewels. With a growing appreciation for the culture and talents of the artisans who crafted them, Falk began to collect the pottery and artifacts seen in her miniatures. Adorned with blossoms, the pottery in her award-winning still lifes is aglow with light, an aspect of painting which she finds most intriguing. Her captivating landscapes of snow-covered adobes and teepees huddled beneath the waning light of winter's gray skies are nevertheless warm and inviting. Smoke curls out of a pueblo chimney, and the walls of a teepee glow with light, suggesting a cozy fire and the warmth to found within. Surrounded by the beauty of the Southwest, a land she loves, Falk finds abundant inspiration for her art. In turn, her paintings reflect her admiration for the Native Americans who live there: Painting Indian still lifes has been both a rewarding and educational experience. It has enabled me to learn more about the Indian culture and to share its beauty and tradition with others."
