About the Artist: In a world crammed with sound bytes and crowded with deadlines, Robert Seufert's meticulously rendered paintings exude a sense of stillness and an abundance of time. They provide ample space for the viewer to linger, unrushed and undisturbed, in rural settings made distinctive by the inclusion of canals, streams, rivers and the architecture of yesteryear. But beyond capturing a setting's unique characteristics, Seufert also conveys the distinctive light, atmosphere and mood associated with each locale.
Originally from New York City and exceptionally visually oriented, even as a child, Seufert loved to draw and always wanted to be an artist. He holds a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from Temple University's Tyler School of Art and an Associate's Degree from Bucks County Community College. Today, working exclusively in oils, he brings a passion to his art. Seufert creates his realistic landscapes using only a 3-inch painting knife with an arrowhead tip, applying paint as it comes from the tube. Using a stippling process, he achieves depth and shading with a multitude of tiny dots. Moving from the background to the foreground, he works on one section at a time, painstakingly depicting each minute detail such as individual leaves on a tree.
Seufert's style can be described as photo impressionistic. Viewed up close, you can see the individual touches of paint, but when seen from a distance, his paintings appear photographic. He prefers to work in oil because it's an opaque medium, and the paint stays wetter longer, which is well-suited to his knife technique. Working from his photo references, he foregoes the preliminary pencil sketches. Because of his time-consuming method, he enjoys the immediacy of designing a painting right on the canvas, working out the schemes and intricate patterns of vegetation, painting the dark to light values and determining the proper proportions.
A professional artist for more than thirty years, Seufert's work is in great demand and has garnered more than 85 awards. Collectors from all over the U.S., Canada, France, Germany and Japan have acquired approximately 1,700 of his original paintings. They respond to the universal appeal of his realistic subjects. Seufert completes approximately 40 - 45 paintings per year, working from photographs taken on his field trips all over the U.S., but primarily in his adopted home state of Pennsylvania. He shares a studio with his wife, fellow artist Alice Olson Seufert. They have three children and live in suburban Philadelphia, where Seufert also teaches art. He finds teaching refreshing because it requires him to revisit and refine his drawing skills.
Seufert's work has been accepted by national juried exhibitions including Allied Artists, Audubon Artists, the Salmagundi Club, all of New York, and the National Park Academy's "Arts for the Parks" competition in Jackson Hole, WY, in 1987, 1993, 1997 and 1998. His work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the National Academy of Design and the National Arts Club, both of New York City, and the Woodmere Art Museum and the Museum of the Philadelphia Civic Center, both of Philadelphia, PA. Seufert's art is also part of the permanent collection of the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, PA, as well as The Equitable Life Assurance Company and McGraw-Hill Companies.
