From the Artist: I have just finished my 25th painting in the U.S. Open Series of Championship Courses Commissioned by the USGA. It is going to be my last painting in this series. I think 25 is a good place to end the series because I have painted almost all the classic old courses in the rotation and most are coming up again in the future U.S. Open schedule. Since I can do only three or four paintings in a year due to the time they take, it will free up more time to paint some of the courses on my "bucket list." Plus I would like to work on some book projects, which would feature smaller works and watercolors of courses like the St Andrews-area courses or lesser-known courses in Scotland.
The new painting I have just completed is the 9th Hole of Pinehurst No. 2. I visited Pinehurst in April of this year to see the renovation for the first time. I have been there many other times to do the more than five paintings over the years and drawings for the 1999 and 2005 U.S. Opens, and always found it a challenge to find a scene that inspired me to paint it. The problem was there was so much green grass everywhere that it made it hard to find an interesting composition. This time I had a guided and most interesting tour of the course starting at the first hole with the golf course superintendent, Kevin Robinson. I could see right away that the course had a new natural look and everywhere the holes came alive. By that I mean the holes are now visually interesting with the natural contours of the land coming through and more use of natural vegetation. The course now looks as though it has always been there, and I am sure it was intended to look that way. Those are the same reasons why I have always loved the natural look of the old classic courses in Scotland and Ireland, and in the U.S. as well. When we came to the 9th hole, I fell in love and chose it immediately for my 2014 U.S. Open painting. It has been a joy to paint. And it has its resident creature in it as well as some wildflowers, which were everywhere on the course.
This hole reminds me so much of another great course I have painted - Pine Valley. Other people have made the same observation, trying to guess what course it is just by looking at the painting. The painting, to me, is a fitting end to a grand U.S. Open Series I have enjoyed doing these past 25 years! - Linda Hartough
