About the Artist:
George Morland was a fine English painter of genre scenes, marine scenes and landscapes.
He was born in June 1763, in London. His family were all painters and he was taught to paint by his father, first exhibiting at The Royal Academy at the remarkable age of ten.
Morland produced a vast amount of work and was reputed to have painted over 800 canvases in the last eight years of his life alone. He was also renowned for his extravagance and dissipation and spent much of the second half of his life travelling around the country to avoid his creditors. Also plagued by alcoholism, he was eventually arrested and sent to a debtor’s prison in 1799.
Morland died in 1804.
