About the Artist:
Born in Sudbury, Suffolk in 1727, Thomas Gainsborough will always occupy the highest place in the English School, whether as a painter of portraits or landscapes.
The youngest son of a clothier, Gainsborough was very much inclined towards art from an early age, inspired by the Suffolk scenery. At the age of fifteen he was sent to London and entrusted to the care of a silversmith, who introduced him to Gravelot and from whom he learned the art of etching. His talent was soon recognised by Gravelot, who obtained him admission to the Martin Lane Academy, where Gainsborough worked for three years with Francis Hayman.
Then setting himself up in Hatton Gardens, London, he produced a few landscapes before returning to his native town in 1745, where he began his career of portrait painting. Residing in Ipswich between 1750 and 1759, he then moved to Bath where he became a highly sought after painter with a constant flow of business. Gainsborough began to exhibit at the Society of Artists in 1761 and on the foundation of the Royal Academy in 1768, he was one of the original thirty six members. Six years later, Gainsborough set up for a second time in London, where business came so fast that he found himself unable to keep up with the demand.
In 1779 Gainsborough was at the very height of his fame. All the eminent men of the day sat for him and he was the favourite painter of the Royal family, even though Ramsay was the official painter to the King until his death in 1784. From 1769 to 1773 and 1776 to 1783 Gainsborough was a constant exhibitor of landscapes and portraits at the Royal Academy, but he ceased to exhibit in the following years due to a disagreement with the Council. He died of cancer in 1788 and was buried in Kew. His life’s work consisted of over three hundred paintings, more than two hundred and twenty of which were portraits.
