About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Nicolaes Visscher was a member of the substantial and important family of Dutch mapmakers working throughout the 17th century. The clan was founded by Claes Janszoon Visscher, who lived from 1587 to 1652; his son and grandson, both called Nicolaes, and his grandson’s widow Elizabeth, continued the family’s role as important map publishers and art dealers in Amsterdam.

Claes Visscher may have been a pupil of Jodocus Hondius and from about 1620 established his own cartography business. His first atlas actually consisted of maps printed from plates bought from another publisher and slightly amended to include, for example, historical scenes of important conflicts. After Claes’s death in 1652, his son and grandson continued issuing atlases, which were regularly revised and brought up to date and thus highly regarded, though often lacking indexes. Nicolaes Visscher I (the son) issued a number of important world maps and published his atlas, Contractus Orbis Terrarum in several editions between 1656 and his death in 1679.

Nicolaes Visscher I was born in 1618 and died in 1679; his son, Nicolaes Visscher II, was born in 1649 and died in 1702.
