About the Artist:
Whistler had dual nationality of American and British. He was born in 1834 in Massachusetts and like many artists had a chequered and wonderful history. Whistler was inspired by Rembrandt, Valazquez and Ancient Greek sculpture. He was a leader of the Aesthetic Movement and was responsible for influencing the work of various protégés including Walter Sickert, John Singer Sargent, William Merrit Chase, Arthur Frank Matthews and Willis Seaver Adams. He is buried close to the River Thames at St. Nicholas Church in Chiswick.
