About the Artist:
Giovanni Boldini was born in Italy in 1842, but he made his name and worked mainly in Paris. He was famous for his `Belle Epoque` fashion and at the height of his success, he triggered a full-blown craze with women wearing fashions `a la Boldini` waiting for months to be painted in his atelier and even attempting starvation diets to emulate the elongated swan-like elegance of the other worldly creatures of his portraits. Thus, his reputation was reduced to that of a painter of society portraits, but there was much more to him than this. For Boldini, composition and rhythm were more essential even than colour and light and his work, while gesturing towards the future of cinematography, also incorporates the Italian Masters of the past.
