About the Artist:
Artemisia was born in Rome in 1593, and was an Italian Baroque painter. She was brought up by her father, Orazio Gentileschi, who was also a painter. She trained alongside her three brothers, but she was found to be the most talented out of the siblings.
In an era where women had few opportunities to pursue an artistic career, Artemisia was the ?rst woman to become a member of the Academy of the Arts of Drawing in Florence.
Many of Artemisias biblical paintings re?ect the horrors of her own life of repression and injustice. She was known for depicting the female ?gure with great naturalism. Her work fought back against the male violence that dominated her world.
She died in 1656 in Naples, She was known to be the most celebrated female painter of the 17th century.
