About the Artist:
Unfortunately, very little is known about this fine artist.
Prisse is known to have been a French artist and engraver working in the nineteenth century in Paris. He was interested in exploration in far-flung places and was known to have joined a zoological exploration of Algeria in 1840.
The series of plates from which the Rosenstiel's prints were sourced, first appeared in 1860. Their colourful exoticism brought exciting information to the public at a time when mass travel was not possible and when there was no possibility of learning about foreign places through photographs or films.
