About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:
Little is known of this equestrian artist; his work does not appear frequently, but when it does it is very attractive and of an impressive quality. He was most active between the years 1840 and 1872.
The soft sheen of the horses' coats are a characteristic of many of Martin's equestrian portraits, hunting and coaching scenes. At least two of his works were engraved, one being The Bedale, engraved by Simmons in 1842, and the other a portrait, John Mauchan Standing with his Horse, produced by G. B. Black.
