About the Artist:
Ferdinand Gueldry, born in 1858, studied at the Paris Salon from 1878 and began his artistic career by painting local factory workers. Gueldry had a sincere style in that he painted all his subjects, which also included boats, as realistically as possible.
Gueldry's period of study with Gérome gave him the formal training he needed to develop his artistic talents. In turn, his skill was rewarded with numerous medals, including a Second Class at the Universal Show in 1889 and a Top Class at the same show in 1900. In the same year he was awarded a travelling grant which he used to research scenes and ideas for future paintings.
Even at the age of 75 Gueldry's artistic career was still going strong, and he exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1933.
