About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:
Between 1900 and 1930, Curtis travelled across the continent of North America photographing more than 70 Native American tribes. The photographs presented daily activities, customs and religions of a people he called `a vanishing race`. To this end, Curtis often staged his subjects and set-up scenes using tribal artefacts and traditions to match his somewhat romanticised vision of the people he studied. He dedicated his total life to this task putting it before his family, his business and even his health. He created `The North American Indian` which consisted of over 700 large portfolio images, over 1,500 volume size images and over 7,000 pages of text. `The North American Indian` is a part of American history in both its imagery and its creation.
