About the Artist:
The 19th Century American painter, Frederic Edwin Church, possessed an outstanding talent for creating challenging landscapes. One of his greatest admirers was JMW Turner, which says much about the quality of his work.
Church was born in Connecticut on the 7th April 1826. He travelled extensively in search of inspiring landscapes to paint and, in his early thirties, he visited South America and produced stunning canvasses which met with great acclaim when they were exhibited in America in 1859.
Church was very keen on religious imagery and he created many grandiose landscapes which reflected the glory of creation. The power of the Niagara Falls, for example, was one of his favourite themes.
Frederic Church died in New York in 1900.
