About the Artist:
Gaston La Touche was a French artist born in 1854. Originally from Normandy, La Touche began art lessons as a child. He took drawing lessons for ten years, until they were cancelled at start of the Franco-Prussian War. Aged just 15, this tuition would be his only formal training in art.
In 1875, La Touche exhibited at the Paris Salons. It was here that he formed friendships with the likes of Edgar Degas and Eduoard Manet.
His style and aesthetic evolved significantly over his creative career. His early paintings were dark in tone and depicted social scenes in great detail, echoing the works of Dutch masters. He later refined his approach by adding more lightness, in both colour and subject matter.
