About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:
Nineteenth century animal artist, Joseph Wolfe, was born in Maez, in Prussia.
Having been brought up on his father’s farm, Wolfe developed a passion for wildlife, and particularly for birds. He was thus fortunate to be introduced at a young age to the great naturalist Dr. Kaup, for whom he completed many sketches.
Wolfe studied at The Antwerp Academy and then moved to London to work as an illustrator for Gray’s Genera of Birds. Soon noted for his remarkable accuracy and for his skill as a draughtsman, he was then asked in 1849 to assist in the preparation of the great reference work, Birds of Britain.
Wolfe settled quickly into the London lifestyle and befriended many of the great artistic figures of the day, including Rossetti and Landseer.
He died in London in 1899.
