About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Macdonald Gill was born in Brighton on 6th October 1884.

Macdonald Gill, also known as Max Gill, was the brother of Eric Gill, a British sculptor, engraver, designer and printmaker affiliated with the Arts and Crafts Movement of the late nineteenth century. After completing his education at Chichester School of Art and the Central School of Art, Gill studied as an architect and worked with Roger Fry on the interior decorations of the House of Commons, Lincoln Cathedral and Borough Polytechnic.

Along with his architectural work Macdonald Gill was a superbly talented artist, illustrator and designer. He was an extremely versatile artist and a renowned letterer as he became a member of the War Graves Committee whereby he designed the standard style of lettering used on all headstones of the deceased from the British Army from the First World War.

Along with ‘Tea Revives the World’, Macdonald Gill designed numerous other decorative, colourful maps and posters including many maps and posters for institutions, country houses as well as communication and transport companies such as the ‘Wonderground Map of London Town.’
