About the Artist:
The Hungarian artist Jacob Bogdani was born in 1658 and is best known today as one of the foremost painters of exotic animal and bird compositions of the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
Bogdani was born in Eperjes, Saros, in Hungary but worked in northern Europe from approximately 1684, based firstly in Amsterdam and then in London from 1688, where he became known as "the Hungarian".
In London, Bogdani acquired a considerable reputation as a specialist still life and bird painter at the Court of Queen Anne and several of his paintings are today held in the Royal Collection.
Bogdani's commissions included subjects for Hampton Court Palace and for King William's palace at Dieren in Holland. His canvases are usually crowded with groups of exotic wild fowl, displaying all their colourful finery and often set against backgrounds of classical architecture.
Bogdani died in London on 11th February 1724.
