About the Artist : Born William Samuel Cook Ellenshaw in London, he began his career as an assistant matte artist, working on films like "Things to Come" (1936), "Black Narcissus" (1947), and "The Red Shoes" (1948) under the guidance of his mentor W. Percy Day.12In 1948, Walt Disney personally chose Ellenshaw to recreate scenes of old England on painted backgrounds for Disney's first live-action film "Treasure Island" (1950).2 Impressed by his artistry, Disney brought him to Hollywood to work on "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" (1954), which won an Oscar for best special effects.2Ellenshaw's most celebrated achievement was winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for his groundbreaking work on "Mary Poppins" (1964).12 He contributed to over 30 Disney films, including "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" (1959), "Swiss Family Robinson" (1960), "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" (1971), and "The Black Hole" (1979).12A renowned landscape artist, Ellenshaw's breathtaking paintings were published in the book "The Garden Within: The Art of Peter Ellenshaw" in 1996, inspiring Disney merchandise.2 He was named a Disney Legend in 1993 and continued painting until his death in 2007 at age 93 in Santa Barbara, California.
