Carr studied art in San Francisco and England and visited France in 1910-11, but it was in the remote native Indian villages of her home province that she found creative inspiration. One of Canada's most famous painters, her career is testimony to the fact that achievement is not reserved for the young. Carr was 57 years old before her painting gained national critical attention, and it was in the years that followed that she created the body of work on which her reputation rests.
