About the Artist: A native of Quincy, Mass., JOSEPH MCGURL was born in 1958. He grew up observing and working with his father, muralist James McGurl, from whom he received his most influential instruction. He subsequently graduated from Massachusetts College of Art and studied in England and Italy. Mr. McGurl is an elected member of the elite Guild of Boston Artists where he won the First Place Gold Medal of the Annual Member's Show. He has also won awards from the Salmagundi Club in New York City and the Copley Society of Boston where he was the youngest artist ever designated a Copley Master. In 1989, he was presented the rarely-awarded John Singleton Copley Award from the Copley Society. In addition, Mr. McGurl has exhibited in the most prestigious regional and national galleries. Joseph's paintings are often seen in relationship to the great 19th-century luminist painters but with a thoroughly modern approach to style and subject. This has attracted the attention of museum curators who have included his work in shows at the Fitchburg Art Museum, The Newport Art Museum and the Cape Museum of Fine Art. His creative process is to paint small sketches of the scene on location. Back at the studio, these are re-interpreted to form the foundation for the large finished canvases. Rather than relying on photography, this method allows him to create works based on his sketches, memory, and his imagination. Joseph worked for a period as a yacht captain sailing throughout the East Coast and in the Caribbean. During the summer months, he cruises the coast of New England with his wife and children aboard their Down East cruiser ATELIER which he uses as a floating studio.
