About the Art: Courageous successfully defended of the America's Cup twice. Once in 1974, with Ted Hood at the helm, then again in 1977 with Ted Turner steering. John was commissioned by Ted Turner to do this painting for the occasion of the 30th Anniversary Reunion of the crew in Newport, Rhode Island. John attended the 1977 races and was inspired by his memories of those exciting times. He's portrayed Courageous and Australia just after rounding the 2nd mark, with the challenging yacht in a very threatening position. The composition frames Australia, back-lit under the spinnaker of Courageous, and concentrates the action in the center of the painting. It's a close-in perspective that no photographer could have taken since no one could have been in this area. Also showing in this view is the 'privileged fleet' and the main spectator fleet which consisted of the Navy destroyer Newman K. Perry, an assortment of Coast Guard patrol boats, the Good Year blimp, a number of planes, a helicopter and a large variety of yachts.
