About the Art: "You must be new around here..." Actually, we all are, and that's one of the notions that inspires the remarkable paintings of Carl Brenders. "What fascinates me is that when I paint all of this detail in the backgrounds, I paint, in fact, a complete story that is sometimes hundreds of thousands of years old...Wildlife art shows the essence of life and tells a story of millions of years," writes Brenders. For most people, a rock is a static, inanimate object, but not for Brenders. He finds them fascinating because each represents an action-packed adventure. He paints their every detail in order to tell their story - the history of our planet as shaped by the forces of nature. From gigantic boulders to tiny pebbles, each rock has been formed by the elements. Each represents glaciers, explosions, eruptions and movements of the earth's crust through the ages. With each passing second, each stone is transformed by shifting lights and shadows and altered by lichens and mosses. This is what inspired New to the Neighborhood. In it, Brenders takes extra care to depict a boulder that came to rest in a particular spot. Its enduring presence signifies the power of nature. A more recent newcomer, a one-thousand-year old juniper tree grows from it. The latest arrivals to this ancient setting - the cougar and magpies - regard each other with a proprietary eye. After pondering this work of art, you will see nature in a different light, and ordinary rocks will never seem the same.
Carl Brenders' love for all creatures, from the friendly to the ferocious, is evident in his masterful attention to their every detail; nothing is overlooked. With his imagination, Brenders is able to get close enough to wild animals so that he can almost feel their textures. Consequently, his work has a tactile reality, giving us the sense of having been where even the most intrepid of field guides have not ventured. Of this ability Brenders says, "A painter is a privileged being, because in his imagination he can come very close to the animals he paints. In reality, one can never come this close to wild animals, particularly if they are predators."
