About the Art: Alan Bateman was born in Nigeria, but his family returned to North America where he spent much of his youth in rural settings in Ontario and Nova Scotia. Though he shares artistic talent with his father, Robert Bateman, Alan Bateman has taken his own independent direction with his artwork. As a teenager, Bateman was involved in both a group show and a one-man show at the Dartmouth Heritage Museum in Nova Scotia. Following high school, he attended the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. His studies were varied, but he concentrated on printmaking and art education. Bateman completed five years of college and graduated with both a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Art Education. While living on the Gulf Islands in British Columbia from the autumn of 1988 until the autumn of 1989, Bateman worked on paintings for a group Christmas show at Beckett Gallery in Hamilton, Ontario. In October of 1989, Bateman was included in the Visions of Canada" show at Beckett Gallery. He also participated in the "Miniatures 89" show in Minnesota. In 1990, Bateman had a one-man show at Beckett Gallery and participated in the Burlington Cultural Center auction, also in Ontario.
