About the Artist: Rod Lawrence thinks his art is a grand excuse to be outdoors, studying and observing wildlife. His paintings reflect his enthusiasm for nature. Working primarily in acrylics and gouache - but also proficient in oils, pen and ink and pastels - Lawrence depicts his wildlife subjects in a highly detailed and precise fashion.
Lawrence graduated magna cum laude with a fine arts degree from the University of Michigan. Since then he has been working full time as a professional artist. Some of his credits include being named Michigan Ducks Unlimited's 1979 Waterfowl Artist of the Year and Michigan's 1981 Artist of the Year. His design won the 1983 Michigan Duck Stamp competition, and he has twice won the Michigan Trout Stamp competition, in 1981 and 1987.
Lawrence paintings hang in various collections, galleries and museums in the United States and Canada. He has exhibited in numerous group and one-man shows, including the prestigious Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum's "Birds in Art" show. His art has appeared as covers, illustrations and features in many outdoor magazines and books, and he is an active member of many wildlife and conservation organizations.
A log cabin in the woods, overlooking a branch of the Manistee River in Michigan, is home for Lawrence and his family. The insignia preceding his signature in each of his paintings illustrates the importance of his family in his life and work. The oddly shaped "S" is for his wife, Susan, and the "M" and "B" represent his sons, Matthew and Brett.
