About the Artist:In my travels with my friend, George Orrison, through the Virginia countryside looking for an area I had not painted before, we passed through Culpeper. I spotted the Courthouse and thought it would make a splendid backdrop for some sort of scene. After investigating the possibilities, I found that this beautiful, prominent building was built in 1870, too late for my painting. However, there are two photos of wartime Culpeper that showed the original courthouse from the Civil War period. It was an utterly fascinating building and the photos showed enough for me to be able to reconstruct the entire street. Since I had painted Candlelight and Roses in 1998, which depicts Gen. J.E.B. Stuart at a ball in Culpeper, I thought "Why not paint the prequel to the ball?" People could be watching with excitement as Stuart and his wife arrive at the ball. It would give me an opportunity to showcase the courthouse and church in the background.
