About the Art: To me this is one of the most beautiful birds we have in British Columbia. Its feathers are not brilliant hues of red or blue or yellow like some other birds but if you look closely at my painting, you will be as amazed as I am at the intricacy and perfection of the patterns. I assume that these colours and patterns are for camouflage since the Ruffed Grouse spends most of its time on the ground in high grass or underbrush or on low tree branches. It does not need long wings for extended flight as do most other birds and in fact the wings are rather rounded like a tennis racquet and they beat very quickly compared to most other birds, especially when escaping from danger. Even in flight the sound of the wings thrashing rapidly through the air is easily heard. They are shy birds and so few people get the chance to see them or hear them. In order to attract females in the mating season, the male will stand tall with feathers all fluffed up and flap his wings to create loud "BOOM" sounds in quick succession just like a drummer banging on his bass drum. One day you may be fortunate enough to hear these sounds echoing through the forest or woodland and you will know that somewhere nearby there is a beautiful male Ruffed Grouse putting on a dazzling show for the ladies.
