About the Artist: Tim Liess has been painting landscapes and wildlife since high school. Essentially self-taught, he received a full, four-year scholarship to the American Academy of Art in Chicago where he majored in graphic design and minored in advertising. While in college, he began exhibiting at fine art shows and also experimenting with different mediums and techniques. He developed a fondness for watercolors, finding them both unique and challenging due to their unpredictability. Liess draws his inspiration from farms, fields and pastures near his home in Indiana, focusing on aspects of the landscape furthest removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. He instills his realistic paintings with moods that evoke peacefulness. Each of his landscapes depicts the quiet majesty of either sunrise or sunset. And in each there is a strong feeling of depth, inviting the viewer to "step into" the painting and relax in this undisturbed setting. His images are created using a controlled, dry-brush layering technique. In some cases, more than a hundred layers are applied. In 1992, InformArt Magazine hailed Liess as "a poet in the art of landscape". In 1995 and 1996 and again in 1998 and 1999, he was the featured artist and encore artist at the Northern Wildlife and Landscape Exposition. Liess paints actual places, discovered in trips through the countryside of the midwest and other wide-open horizons. His skill in capturing the romantic essence of landscape has elevated him to such a stature in the artistic community that today, Liess' work is the subject of national and international acclaim. His works can be found in both private and public collections. He has received numerous awards and in 1992, was selected as one of the "Top Ten Artists to Watch" by U.S. Art Magazine.
