About the Artist: Galina Datloof uses vivid colors to instill a sense of joy in her work. She aims to arrive at a synthesis of the classical and the modern, and among her 'spiritual guides' she counts Matisse, Picasso, Modigliani and Chagall.
Datloof was born in a small village in Russia in 1949. She soon discovered painting would be her vocation in life, as being but a small child she started using charcoal to sketch on the neighborhood walls. In her own words 'Painting was something I just had to do, and that is where my involvement with art began.'
Due to a good measure of talent and much determination, Datloof succeeded in leaving her native village and entering an 'Academy of Arts' in the city. Within her she carried the memories of a large family, struggling with everyday life but nonetheless always singing and playing music. These joy and love of music are reflected throughout her work. During her student years at the Academy, Datloof designed decorations for several musical shows at the local theater, and since then she has continued to combine 'conventional' painting with work at the theater. Here lie the origins of the chamber theater atmosphere that pervades her work. As early as 1977 Datloof's final examination work in the field of theater participated in an exhibition of the theater and cinema painters held at the Manege, one of Moscow's largest exhibition halls.
