About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Moses Pitt flourished between 1654 and 1696 and was a London bookseller, who planned, in conjunction with van Waesbergen, a large world atlas which was to be published in 12 volumes, based on the existing pre-eminent atlas by Blaeu and Jansson.

In the end, the project turned out to be too costly and only four volumes of the planned atlas were published. In fact, Pitt became so embroiled in the financial demands of his atlas that he was ruined and imprisoned for two years for debt.

Most of the maps in the atlas were drawn from other sources, but Pitt himself prepared the map of the Arctic Regions. The four atlases which were published were issued between 1680 and 1683.
