About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

The cartographer Petrus Plancius was born in 1552.

Initially he was a theologian and a minister of the protestant Dutch Reformed Church. Religious persecution in Flanders persuaded him to flee to the more liberal Amsterdam in 1585, where he became interested in cartography and navigation. He gained access to a series of sea charts brought from Portugal and quickly established a reputation that was sealed when he was appointed Cartographer to the newly-founded Dutch East India Company in 1602.

Plancius did not publish any atlases but he did issue over a hundred maps and charts and was a highly influential member of the flourishing Dutch map trade at the turn of the 17th century.

His twin hemisphere World Map of 1594 was re-issued in 1607 by another noted Dutch cartographer, Pieter van den Keere.

Petrus Plancius died in 1622.
