About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Sharon Elphick completed a BA degree in Printed Textiles in the 1990s and, after leaving college in the north of England, she moved back to the south coast, working as a freelance textile designer and starting her own business designing and printing T-shirts. Her textile designs were sold worldwide through agents and the T-shirts were sold in fashion boutiques in London and Japan.

In the mid 1990s she moved to London and became fascinated by the urban landscape; in particular high-rise architecture. She says that she was inspired by the sheer scale of these concrete edifices in the sky; the repetition of windows appealed to my love of pattern. Armed with a borrowed camera, she began walking the streets taking photographs of residential blocks and commercial towers. She comments: When printed and tiled together, these buildings which most considered unsightly suddenly transformed into beautiful kaleidoscopes of perspective and line. When exhibited, these ‘urban tartans’ were an immediate success and she was offered an exhibition in the Paul Smith shop on Floral Street, and from there her career took off.

Sharon Elphick has travelled and produced pieces all around the world, including New York, Paris, Berlin and Sao Paulo. Her work increasingly took her into run-down areas often frequented by graffiti artists, which became a new source of inspiration to her.

Today her work continues to explore urban themes, though increasingly she has also been inspired by a love of nature, in particular of flowers and trees.

She describes her work as "photo-art montage" and Sharon Elphick creations are held at the Victoria & Albert Museum and in the Geffrye Museum in London. She has been commissioned by many private collectors as well as by the Newlyn Art Gallery, St Thomas’ Hospital and many public and private companies, including Mondrian Investment Partners Ltd and Transco. Private collectors include Sir Elton John, who bought a copy of every editioned print after Sharon Elphick’s work was featured in London’s The Times newspaper.
