About the Artist:

David Burr (1803-1875) began his career as a surveyor in upstate New York and went on to become one of America’s most distinguished mapmakers. After publishing the first atlas of New York State in 1829/1830 and producing the maps for A New Universal Atlas (1835), he served from 1832 to 1838 as topographer of the U.S. Post Office Department. In this role he had access to information submitted by postmasters throughout the country, which he used to issue in 1839 a very large Map of the United States of North America along with twelve large-scale postal maps of individual states or regions. He later served as Geographer to the U.S. House of Representatives and then the Senate, held a number of other government positions including first Surveyor General of Utah Territory, and then disappeared from the scene in 1857.
