About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Mitsutani Kunishiro born in Okayama prefecture in 1874 and became a prominent Western-style painter. He studied painting in Koyama Shotaros a private painting academy from 1857- 1916 in Tokyo, he later joined the Western-style painting group Taiheiyo Gakai (Pacific Painting Society).
Japan set its sights on penetrating the Western arena of modernization and Paris at this time was where artists were congregating. Mitsutani assimilated Western modes of painting into his work and during his studies he resided in Paris in 1900 for a year where he worked in a studio belonging to the French Painter and Sculptors, Jean Paul Lauran.
His work was later exhibited at both the Bunten and Teiten exhibitions in Japan. The Exhibitions were comparable to the French Salon in the second half of the nineteenth century. At the beginning of the twentieth century the Japanese administration decided to promote contemporary and traditional artists to preserve their tradtions . The result was the founding of an art organization by the Ministry of Education with annual, juried art exhibitions. The new organization was called the Bunten which had three shows, one for Japanese style painting, one for Western style painting in which Mitsytani featured and one for sculpture. This significantly increased his stature within Japan.
Mitsutan lived in Paris for a second time from 1911 to 1914 and became strongly influenced by Matisse and his Fauvist style, however he still maintained personal and national independence when creating new Japanese art
He was elected a member of the imperial fine arts academy (Teikoku Bijutsu- in) in 1925 and then shortl before his death in 1936 received in 1932 the Prize of Culture of the Asahi newspaper, an award for honourable individuals and groups that have made outstanding accomplishments in the fields of academics and arts, and have greatly contributed to the development and progress of Japanese culture and society at large.
